2. Detox Wirral

Cross the Mersey onto the Wirral and the sauna experience changes completely.
Detox Wirral operates a beachside sauna at Leasowe Bay, placing the sauna directly alongside one of the peninsula's stretches of coastline.
Rather than cooling down in a purpose-built indoor plunge pool, visitors have the option of stepping outside and heading into the sea.
Sessions at Leasowe Bay are organised around high tide, which means opening times change from week to week depending on the water.

3. The Hot Place Sauna
Thurstaston, Wirral
For another very different Wirral sauna experience, head around the peninsula to The Hot Place in Thurstaston.
The Hot Place combines a wood-fired sauna and cold plunge inside a beautifully converted horsebox, creating a much smaller and more intimate setup than Liverpool's larger waterfront venues.
It's located on Station Road beside The Nest Café, surrounded by the countryside and coastline of the Wirral.
Inside the converted horsebox, the wood-fired stove creates the traditional deep heat you'd expect from this style of sauna.
Outside, a cold plunge allows you to move between hot and cold throughout your session.
The small scale is part of the appeal.
Community sessions are limited to small groups, so you're not sharing the sauna with dozens of people.
You can book an individual place and sauna alongside other guests, or hire the space privately if you'd rather have it to yourselves.
That makes The Hot Place particularly well suited to couples, small groups of friends or anyone who prefers a quieter sauna experience.

4. Attis Bathing Club

Attis Bathing Club looks set to introduce another very different style of sauna experience to Liverpool.
Based on David Lewis Street in the Ropewalks area of the city centre, Attis has been developed around the idea of social wellness — creating somewhere people can meet, recover and spend time together without the experience revolving around a traditional bar or night out.
At the centre of the planned venue is a large Finnish sauna designed for around 30 people.
The sauna will be accompanied by filtered ice baths and a dedicated red-light therapy space, creating a much larger contrast-therapy environment than many of the smaller community saunas around Merseyside.
Attis also plans to offer guided contrast-therapy sessions.
Rather than simply moving between the sauna and cold water independently, these sessions are intended to guide visitors through structured hot-and-cold experiences.
The programme announced ahead of opening includes sessions incorporating elements such as breathwork and sound, alongside traditional Aufguss.
Aufguss is a sauna ritual popular across parts of mainland Europe in which a sauna host pours water and aromatic infusions onto heated stones before using towel movements to circulate waves of hot air and steam around the room.
Done properly, it turns an ordinary sauna round into a much more communal and immersive experience.
Attis has also announced a lounge-style café and social space alongside full changing and shower facilities, reinforcing the idea that the venue is designed to be somewhere people can spend time rather than simply complete a sauna session and leave.
Because Attis has not officially opened yet, we've included it here as an upcoming Liverpool sauna rather than a venue you can currently visit.

5. SaunaBirds
Queen's Dock, Liverpool
Liverpool's waterfront has become something of a hotspot for the city's emerging sauna scene.
Based at Liverpool Watersports Centre on Queen's Dock, SaunaBirds brings a traditional wood-fired Scandinavian sauna experience to the southern side of Liverpool city centre.
The community sauna comfortably seats around eight people and is designed specifically around the traditional rhythm of heating up, cooling down and repeating the process.
Alongside the wood-fired sauna are cold-water facilities including two cold baths and a cold shower, giving you everything needed for a proper hot-and-cold session without leaving the site.
Sessions run for around 50 minutes and are supervised.
During that time, guests can move between the sauna and cold water at their own pace, with SaunaBirds recommending shorter cycles of heat and cold rather than trying to remain in the sauna continuously.
Community sessions allow you to book an individual place and share the experience with other guests.
Private sessions are also available if you'd rather take over the sauna with your own group.
Its location at Liverpool Watersports Centre makes SaunaBirds particularly interesting for swimmers.
Open-water swimming takes place in Queen's Dock, although it's important to understand that dock swimming is not included with a SaunaBirds booking.
If you want to combine your sauna session with a swim, that needs to be booked separately with Liverpool Watersports Centre and is subject to their own rules and supervision.
Changing and toilet facilities at the Watersports Centre may also be available to sauna guests when open.
For anyone who likes the authenticity of a traditional wood-fired sauna but still wants to stay close to Liverpool city centre, SaunaBirds hits a particularly nice middle ground.

6. Mersea Sauna

Travel north along the coast from Liverpool and you'll find Mersea Sauna at Crosby Lakeside.
Mersea offers a handcrafted wood-fired Scandinavian sauna beside Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, placing it close to both the water and the wider Sefton coastline.
The sauna is heated using a wood stove and typically operates at the high temperatures associated with traditional Scandinavian sauna culture.
During your session, you're encouraged to alternate between rounds in the heat and periods cooling down outside.
Cold plunge tubs are available for anyone wanting the full hot-and-cold experience, while those who aren't comfortable plunging can simply cool down naturally before heading back inside.
It's a deliberately simple setup: get hot, get cold, recover, repeat.
And sometimes that's exactly what you want from a sauna.
Mersea offers communal sessions where you can book an individual seat and sauna alongside other visitors, as well as the option to reserve a session privately for your own group.
Its location beside Crosby Lakeside also gives it a strong connection to the outdoor and watersports community in the area.
Changing facilities and toilets within Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre are available to sauna customers, and parking is available nearby.
Swimming at Crosby Lakeside is separate from your sauna booking, so if you're planning to combine the two, check the Adventure Centre's current swimming programme in advance.
Crosby Beach is also only a short distance away, making it easy to combine a sauna session with a longer walk along one of Merseyside's best-known stretches of coastline.

Which Sauna in Liverpool, Wirral or Merseyside Should You Visit?
One of the best things about the growing sauna scene around Liverpool and the Wirral is that these venues don't all offer the same experience.
For something particularly distinctive, Wyld Sauna is an obvious starting point.
Floating on Princes Dock and combining sauna with cold-water immersion and access to the dock, it offers something you won't find in many other UK city centres.
If you want to get away from the city and combine sauna with the sea, Detox Wirral at Leasowe Bay gives you a proper coastal experience, with sessions organised around the tide.
For something smaller and more intimate, The Hot Place in Thurstaston combines wood-fired heat, a cold plunge and a converted horsebox in the Wirral countryside.
Back in Liverpool, SaunaBirds provides a traditional Scandinavian-style wood-fired sauna experience beside Queen's Dock, with cold baths available during your session and open-water swimming nearby.
Further north, Mersea Sauna combines wood-fired heat and cold plunging at Crosby Lakeside, close to the Sefton coastline.
And from 19–20 September 2026, Attis Bathing Club is currently expected to add another completely different option to the city.
Its planned 30-person Finnish sauna, filtered ice baths and guided contrast experiences could make it one of the largest dedicated social sauna spaces in the area.
Until Attis officially opens, however, treat it as one for the calendar rather than somewhere you can currently book and visit.
There isn't really one single "best" sauna across Liverpool and the Wirral.
The better question is what sort of sauna day you're looking for.
Liverpool, Wirral & Merseyside's Sauna Scene Is Growing
Perhaps the most exciting thing about sauna culture in this part of the North West is how quickly it has developed.
Liverpool now has waterfront and community sauna experiences right beside its docks.
On the Wirral, sauna culture is becoming increasingly connected with the coast, with venues at Leasowe and Thurstaston offering very different ways to combine heat, cold and the outdoors.
Further north, Crosby adds another wood-fired sauna destination beside the water.
And with larger purpose-built concepts such as Attis now preparing to open in Liverpool city centre, the variety is only increasing.
Importantly, these aren't simply hotels or gyms that happen to contain a sauna.
They're places being built around sauna culture itself — heat, cold, ritual, community and taking some time away from everyday life.
